The realization of EU membership remains Montenegro’s main impeller for achieving longevous sustainable stability and development. Striving for continuous improvement and the EU’s encouraging stimulus are key elements to support the Montenegrin path towards much needed reforms, political equilibrium and stability as well as socio-economic progress. Yet, the flattering denomination of “frontrunner” is only partially defining Montenegro’s commitment on its EU integration path. Even though the country’s devotion cannot be a matter of dispute, concerns over rule of law, democracy, and human rights hide behind the curtains. Among these, media freedom is the one which most loudly testifies to the imperative need for more consolidated democratization processes and institution building. This roundtable will therefore address the following questions: What are the main obstacles the country is facing on its democracy-building mission and what are the available remedies? What is the role of civil society organisations in stimulating and empowering institutional reforms in the fields of electoral administration and combatting corruption? How can the efficiency of rule of law reforms be improved? How can the foundations of a truly representative and participatory democracy be established?
