Equality in public - for Safe Public Spaces in Montenegro
The Center for Monitoring and Research (CeMI) has, for many years, been conducting activities aimed at strengthening gender equality and protecting women’s rights in public spaces. Through research and analyses, CeMI has found that women who are active in political, public, and media life are among the most frequent targets of gender-based hate speech and digital violence. Such attacks most often occur via social media and online portals, and very often remain without an adequate response from institutions, editorial offices, or the public.
For these reasons, the project “Equal in Public – For a Safe Public Spaces in Montenegro” aims, through a series of concrete and interconnected activities, to improve the safety of women in the digital space, empower women who actively participate in public life, and raise professional standards in media reporting.
The project has three key areas of action:
- Combating hate speech against women in the online space, through content analysis and public advocacy;
- Empowering women who are exposed to attacks, especially those engaged in politics and social work;
- Improving media practices, through the creation of a handbook and work with journalists and editors to raise the level of professional and gender-sensitive communication.
The project is implemented by the Center for Monitoring and Research (CeMI) with the financial support of the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights.
